Wind Energy a safe clean method of generating sustainable energy
A free and renewable source of energy.
It has been harnessed since 250 BC when wind mills were first used for grinding cereal crops and driving water pumps. It was first used to generate electricity in 1888 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA.
Wind generation has made substantial advances in recent years. With the exception of hydro-electric, where the resource has largely been exploited, wind energy has proven to be one of the most cost effective and reliable renewable generation technologies. This is translating into substantial growth with world-wide installed capacity increasing at an annual rate of more than 28% for the last 10 years. Currently there are over 100,000 wind turbines installed in 70 countries. These turbines have an installed capacity of over 74,000 MW (Source: Global Wind Energy Council Aug 2008).
